THE CHALLENGE
One of the main challenges the sector is confronting is the emergence of a new paradigm in which patients take on a proactive role, demanding more information and connection with the system. Consequently, they seek empowerment and assume a more active role in managing their health. To address these needs, it is necessary to leverage new methodologies and technological solutions to create innovative and personalized solutions, that also improves patients’ adherence to the treatment. In this context, virtual reality emerges as a supportive therapeutic tool with great potential, capable of creating customized and immersive environments.
The challenge was to enhance the functional skills and cognitive competencies of individuals with schizophrenia, providing a daily-life scenario and a real-life situation, which can have a significant impact on their ability to perform daily activities, work, and lead a more active social life.
THE SOLUTION
A collaborative effort between healthcare professionals at the hospital and technology experts at NTT DATA has resulted in the development of a digital supportive therapeutic tool. It was designed to complement conventional treatments, offering immersive environments with a primary focus on enhancing functionality, autonomy, and addressing cognitive symptoms in patients with schizophrenia.
Through immersive and interactive scenarios, patients are exposed to everyday situations, such as making the bed, putting on clean clothes, or raising the blinds, that they can practice as part of their routine. This approach allows them to improve their autonomy and skills in a controlled environment that enhances the appeal and motivation of the therapeutic process.
