THE CHALLENGE
To address its diverse needs, the European airline was in search of solutions that would allow it to optimize employee training and simultaneously reduce associated risks. Although it offered a comprehensive set of training courses crucial for ground operations safety, it faced the challenge of managing significant costs linked to these programs.
The need for a certified trainer on-site, conducting hands-on activities on the runway, handling complex devices or machinery, and the presence of an aircraft during training contributed to escalating the costs associated with the courses. The complexity of the training was accentuated due to the possibility of failures or malfunctions during ground operations.
In this context, the airline was seeking innovative solutions that would allow it to maintain the quality and effectiveness of its ground operations training while simultaneously looking to optimize associated costs.
THE SOLUTION
At NTT DATA, in collaboration with the airline’s ground operations training department, we explored the possibility of virtualizing one of the most commonly conducted physical training sessions: the aircraft handling procedure. This procedure involves the technical inspection of an aircraft upon arrival at the terminal, ensuring it is ready for takeoff.
Traditionally, this training could only be conducted in a physical setting, requiring the shutdown of parts of an airport, an aircraft, and the necessary personnel, incurring significant costs. Through the adaptation of this training into an immersive experience, we successfully replicated the procedure with remarkable fidelity. This transformation allows for an unlimited number of repetitions and the simulation of potential failures in the process, providing a comprehensive and cost-effective training solution.
